Tanzania
A large, stable East African market still early in enterprise AI adoption.
Tanzania has around 65 million people and an economy anchored in agriculture, mining, and tourism, with Dar es Salaam as the commercial capital and Dodoma as the seat of government. Growth has been steady, though the private tech sector is smaller and less capitalised than in Kenya.
Mobile money usage is significant, led by M-Pesa Tanzania, Tigo Pesa, and Airtel Money, but interoperability and rural coverage trail Kenya's benchmark. Fixed broadband remains limited outside Dar es Salaam, and the government's Tanzania ICT strategy is still building out core digital infrastructure.
Agriculture and mining, particularly gold, remain the largest sectors for AI application in yield forecasting and geological analysis. Tourism, a major foreign exchange earner around Zanzibar and the northern safari circuit, is beginning to adopt AI for demand forecasting and dynamic pricing.
The Personal Data Protection Act, 2022 established Tanzania's first comprehensive data protection framework, with the Personal Data Protection Commission still building enforcement infrastructure. This puts Tanzania roughly in line with regional peers on paper, though practical enforcement is less mature than in Kenya or South Africa.
Kwish's opening is mining and tourism operators who need AI forecasting tools and can absorb early-mover risk in a regulatory environment that is still settling, ahead of broader enterprise demand catching up.
